about

“Ghost Piano,” was written for my late grandfather. He was an accomplished jazz pianist and my memories of him are intrinsically tied to music. Growing up, my grandparents’ house was always filled with the sound of him playing piano. After his passing I not only missed his presence but the sound of his music. One Christmas my grandma revealed that one of the pianos in their house was a player piano that my grandfather had recorded one of his pieces on. My extended family gathered around and listened to his recording - the keys on the piano would press down as if actually being played - and it was like he was with us again.

“Ghost Piano,” wasn’t the first song written for Of House’s second record, but it was the song that set the record in motion. Before recording, “Ghost Piano,” I had a little over thirty demos ready to be jammed out by the band. Then the pandemic hit and everything stopped. I recorded, “Ghost Piano,” at my home studio and after that the rest of the album fell into place. After a while I decided to stop waiting for when it would be safe to get back together with the band to finish the record and finished it myself. I played every instrument except for the female vocals, which are sung by my wife Amanda. And though the band isn’t heard on the record they were an indelible part of the making of the record. They listened to demos, mixes, etc. and gave their feedback along the way.

All money from this single will go to the Detroit Justice center.

lyrics

Once I was a lazy Susan
I was just spinning my wheels
When everything of mine was taken
That's when I started to feel

CHORUS
Everything that's lost
Will exact a cost
But everything in life
Will be so serene... In time

Once I was a wood chopping axe
Used to keep a crackling fire
When I was swung for the last time
I was thrown on top of the fire

CHORUS
Everything that's lost
Will exact a cost
But everything in life
Will be so serene... In time

Once I was a ghost piano
Playing someone else's song
As the notes poured from my keyboard
I knew I recognized it all along

As the family gathered round me
To hear the song imprinted on me
I knew the tears that they were shedding
Were not for my melody

CHORUS
Everything that's lost
Will exact a cost
But everything in life
Will be so serene... In time
